Licenses: June 2020

EP Cargo a.s. has now received a license for Hungary, in addition to safety certificates in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. Valid from June 5, 2020, to October 12, 2020. The short validity period is due to the uniform expiration date for all of the company’s certificates.

Operail Finland Oy had only received its railway operator license in May 2020; now it has been granted the single safety certificate for Finland—valid from June 1, 2020, through May 31, 2025.

The French company Transifer SAS has been granted a license extension in the form of a single safety certificate valid from June 3, 2020, through June 3, 2025.

In addition to Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and Romania, the CER Cargo Group can also operate its own services in Austria. CER Hungary Zrt. was granted a Part B safety certificate for the network there, valid from June 3, 2020, to November 30, 2021.

Shortly before its expiration on July 1, the safety certificate (Part A) of the Swedish company ProTrain Trafik AB was renewed. The new validity period is from June 5, 2020, to June 4, 2025.

Metrans Rail (Deutschland) GmbH (MTRD), based in Leipzig, received a safety certificate (Parts A and B) valid from June 5, 2020, through June 4, 2025, for rail freight transport in Germany.

Following Track Tec Rail in April 2020, the safety certificate—Parts A and B for Poland—for the sister company Track Tec Logistics Sp. z o.o. was also extended ahead of schedule. The new validity period is from June 29, 2020, to June 29, 2025.

Shortly before its safety certificate was set to expire, ferrotract SAS received a single safety certificate for France—valid from June 19, 2020, through June 19, 2025.

DB Cargo Polska SA may continue to operate under its own license. The Part A+B safety certificates have been renewed and are now valid from June 12, 2020, through June 12, 2025.

The Hungarian company Komplex Rail Kft. now holds a license for Slovakia, in addition to those it already holds for Hungary and the Czech Republic. The safety certificate is valid from June 15, 2020, through March 29, 2021.

Crossrail Benelux NV's safety certificates have been extended by two years: The A certificate is now valid through October 19, 2022, and the B certificate through April 9, 2023.

The newly established company EVM Rail S.r.l. has received a single safety certificate for Italy, valid from June 29, 2020, through June 28, 2025.

The Lithuanian railway company AB LG Cargo received a B certificate for Poland—valid from June 23, 2020, to June 23, 2025.

Shortly before the A certificate expired, Pol-Miedź Trans Sp. z o.o. received new licenses for Poland. The A and B certificates are valid from June 5, 2020, through June 5, 2025.

The A certificate held by the Polish freight railway Torpol SA since 2015 has been renewed. The new validity period is from June 12, 2020, to June 12, 2025.

The license held by duisport rail GmbH for the Netherlands has also been extended. However, instead of a B certificate, the company now holds an ERA SSC valid from June 23, 2020, to June 22, 2025, covering the entire network except for the HSL Süd. “Compared to the exclusively national option, this wasn’t exactly ‘cheap,’ so it would be nice if we could recoup the costs through corresponding operations. But it will essentially serve as a ‘better backup,’ since we’d prefer not to compete with any of our partners in or around Duisburg whenever possible.” Railexperts operates the control center for duisport rail in the Netherlands.

LG Cargo, a freight transportation company owned by the largest railway group in the Baltic States, Lithuanian Railways  (Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai),  has joined forces with the largest railway freight transport operator in Poland, PKP Cargo, and intermodal transport operator and technology provider CargoBeamer to pilot an intermodal train with road semi-trailers.

On May14th a train carrying 22 semi-trailers arrived at Sestokai terminal, a southwest district of Lithuania after a 2-day trip from Kaldenkirchen Intermodal Terminal, near the German border with the Netherlands. This was the first ever semi-trailer transport by freight train in the Baltic States.

During the pilot, semitrailers of eight international operating transport and logistics companies were delivered. Loaded on a special train wagon technology provided by CargoBeamer semi-trailers reached Sestokai by the European gauge Rail Baltica. At the terminal in Sestokai they were again connected to the trucks to drive the last mile to the final point of unloading.

Breaking point in the freight market

“This historic pilot carriage of semi-trailers symbolizes a major turning point in the freight transportation market, where synergies between several modes of transport guarantee fast and reliable freight transportation for all participants in the logistics chain. However, the biggest achievement of such transportation is the environmental friendliness and reduction of the negative impact of heavy vehicles on the environment. We hope that the new practice will strengthen the advantages of each of the modes of transport – the economy and environmental friendliness of rail transport in long-distance transportation, and the flexibility of road transport when delivering freight door-to-door,” said Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of LG Cargo.

„This pilot is of great importance to us as it will make it possible to test new possibilities for freight transport from Lithuania via Poland to Western Europe and in the opposite direction. This route is currently dominated by road transport and we want to change this unfavorable structure. Therefore, together with our partners, we work on preparing a competitive transport offer. This is a business project but our efforts will also have positive impact on environmental protection. Railways are more environment-friendly than road transport as they release much less harmful gases into the atmosphere and the European Union expects that member states will make efforts to gradually increase the share of railways in freight transport. In addition, trains provide safe transport of goods, compared to trucks, as the accident rate in railways is many times lower than on roads“, stated Czeslaw Warsewicz, CEO of PKP CARGO.

„CargoBeamer has been interested in a train between Lithuania and the Rhein-Ruhr region in Germany since its first visit to Kaunas ten years ago. It is an exciting opportunity, and thanks to a great cooperation with Lithuanian Railways we can see this initial vision materialize now. Lithuania is the home of several big logistics players and we see a future market for sustainable rail transportation of road trailers from central Europe into the Baltics. We look forward to grow this business together with Lithuanian Railways,“ said Hans-Juergen Weidemann, CEO of CargoBeamer.

The long-distance transportation of semi-trailers by rail is encouraged by the European Union (EU), as it has a lower impact on the environment and increases road safety. It is also beneficial for logistics and road transport companies, as it saves fuel and human resources. In addition, it is easier and faster to cross borders between countries, thus avoiding long downtime and possible delays at customs.

The European Commission aims to achieve that 30% of goods carried by more than 300 kilometers would be transported by rail or water transport by 2030, and by 2050 this figure should exceed 50%.

LTE Brings Sugar to Switzerland

The LTE Group has begun transporting sugar from Poland to Switzerland on behalf of VTG Rail Logistics. From Basel onward, these services are operated under a license from Eisenbahndienstleister GmbH (EDG), whose new managing director, Markus Bertram, previously headed LTE Netherlands. In Poland, a third party provides the traction.

The cars are provided by VTG. They are part of a series of Uagnpps-type sugar cars that were primarily procured for the Südzucker Group’s operations. At the time, the railcar leasing company had procured four train sets at its own risk, which were initially used for Südzucker operations for two years.
