German roundwood to the Czech Republic

Since July 2016, Mercer International Inc. and the Mondi Group have been handling their wood import needs in Europe through a joint venture. The joint venture, wood2M GmbH, was founded on June 18, 2016, and is headquartered in Blankenstein, the location of Mercer’s Rosenthal pulp and paper mill.

The goal is to use the new purchasing company to optimize the logistics flows of both companies in order to further enhance their international competitiveness. Among other things, this collaboration will make it possible to reduce transportation costs, improve timber flows, and further strengthen the partnership with timber suppliers.

Since 2017, roundwood shipments transported by rail have included trains from Germany to the Mondi SCP plant in Ružomberok [SK], which is connected to the Lisková train station via a spur track. Trains operating on this route include those using cars from Mercer’s fleet:

  • From northern Germany (Rostock, Malchow, Eberswalde): Raildox and Lokorail, with a locomotive change in Bad Schandau.
  • From southern Germany (Aschaffenburg, Parkstein-Hütten), SETG operates its own locomotives under licenses from K-Rail (DE), GCA, S-Rail (AT), and Lokorail.
